Frequently Asked Questions
What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray·kee) is a complementary therapy based on Eastern beliefs that harness the vital power of energy healing. Developed in the late 19th century, Reiki originated in Japan. Today, it serves many important purposes in and out of medical settings.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
How does Reiki Work?
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

How do I prepare for a Reiki Session?
To prepare for your Reiki session, we recommend several steps to optimize your experience. Firstly, we suggest avoiding caffeine and heavy meals beforehand to promote relaxation and enhance your receptivity to the energy work. Additionally, filling out the waiver form beforehand ensures a smoother process and allows us to address any specific concerns or preferences you may have. Wearing comfortable clothing is advisable, as you’ll remain fully clothed during the session. Lastly, approach the session with an open mind and willingness to receive the healing energy. Your readiness and receptivity play a significant role in the effectiveness of the treatment. If you have any further questions or concerns about preparing for your Reiki session, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at fairyluxhealing@gmail.com.
Why is a Reiki Waiver Form required?
All clients are required to fill out a Reiki waiver form as a precautionary measure to ensure your safety and well-being during the session. This form allows me to gain insight into any existing medical conditions, allergies, or sensitivities you may have, enabling me to tailor the treatment accordingly and minimize any potential risks. Additionally, the waiver form serves as a means of obtaining your informed consent, outlining the nature of the Reiki session, its benefits, and any potential risks or side effects. It also provides legal protection for both you and myself by clarifying responsibilities and liabilities. Ultimately, requiring the waiver form is a standard practice in the holistic wellness industry, reflecting my commitment to professionalism, ethics, and accountability in delivering Reiki services.
What Can I Expect at a Reiki Session?
Once you have arrived for your session, you will either lie down—fully dressed—on a comfortable massage table or sit in a comfortable chair in a private setting. The practitioner will then place their palms on or over different parts of your head, torso, and limbs that are considered energy hubs. There are as many as 15 different hand positions the practitioner may use in order to do the most good for your flow of energy, and each of these positions typically last for 3 to 10 minutes.
Your practitioner will use many techniques, including—
- Beaming
- Centering
- Clearing
- Focusing
- Infusing
- Raking
- Smoothing
One important clarification: Even though you may be lying on a massage table, you aren’t receiving a massage. Reiki is not a form of massage. At the very most, you will receive gentle touch.
You may feel tingling, heat, or pulsing sensations where your practitioner is working, or nothing at all but a sense of relaxation. Sometimes the practitioner’s hands get very warm in response to the energy. This is absolutely normal and nothing over which to be alarmed.
Very often, individuals receiving Reiki fall asleep during the session. This is okay, too, as you don’t need to be awake to experience the benefits!
Sessions typically last 45–90 minutes in length.
What is a Chakra?
“The Chakras are a part of the subtle energy system and play an important role in health and healing.” – William Lee Rand The Spirit of Reiki
Chakra is a sanskrit word meaning “spinning wheel.” The Chakras are a part of the subtle energy system and play an important role in health and healing.
Where do sessions take place?
My favorite aspect of practicing Reiki is that the location is flexible. If it takes place in person, I usually like to rent a space from BronxWitch HQ located in the Bronx, NY in advance, where I can also rent a table. It is a very welcoming environment for all folks and a convenient location. It is also the safe space where I have apprenticed with Shinpiden, Tom Capshew to be a certified Shinpiden as of November 2023.
If we have built rapport and you are comfortable visiting me in person, I sometimes practice out of my living room in New York, NY. Another in-person option, is that I can make a house call, where I would bring my Reiki table to your premises, or you can choose a space that is safe and comfortable for you.
The same goes for the distance sessions, which are available by video conference (Zoom, Google meets or Skype-depending on the internet connection sometimes this can glitch or not be clear), phone or blocked out time (no connection). You can pick a place to lay down or sit where you feel comfortable to receive and welcome Reiki energy.
What can I expect from a Reiki session?
In practicing Reiki, every experience is different. However, there are a few variables that remain constant depending on the type of session, in-person versus distance. Before any session, you’ll receive an email about being prepared for the appointment. When you arrive, you’ll be invited to ask questions and mention what you would like to focus on. It’s to your discretion because Reiki energy always knows where to go.
Once you’re set up in a comfortable space, the Reiki table (image below), seat, etc., you’ll be invited to relax your body and mind.

Every session, whether in person or distance will begin with a guided meditation. Depending on your sensory preference, I can chime a sound bowl or play binaural beats, both or neither. For an in person session, I’ll check your sensory comfort of incense and sage, as well as your consent for a hands-on or hands off session. Sometimes I may or may not talk during the remainder of the session, but typically there’s very little talking on my behalf. Other practitioners may be inclined differently.
During the session you can expect to feel deeply relaxed, you may daydream or fall into a light sleep. You may experience some warmth, tingling or alertness, it’s important that you are grounded and hydrate after a session. Which I can assist with in person and guide you through from a distance. A short term after effect, is that some may feel fatigued while others can feel invigorated.
Another favorite part of Reiki is getting your feedback after of what you experienced, no two sessions are alike.
What should I wear to a Reiki session?
Whether it is in person or a distance session, you should wear comfortable clothes. Loose fitting so that you can relax during the session.
Are there any aftercare steps post a Reiki session?
Yes, I always make sure to send aftercare steps after a Reiki session and personalize it depending if there was something additional during the session like a card reading, birth chart reading, or if I have an inspired message for you afterwards. However, the basic steps for aftercare are the following:
- Hydrate – drink plenty of water
- Self-care – Epsom salt bath or shower
- Eat healthy foods
- Sleep- get plenty of sleep
- Additional Reiki sessions
